THE JBS 5 POINTS OF ARCHITECTURE:

These five guiding principles underscore everything we do as architects, artists and designers at Jesse Bennett Studio.

EMBRACING CONTRAST

Light and dark; solid and void; rough and polished. We believe our buildings, like many facets of life and design, should harness these dual, contrasting qualities to achieve a greater depth of architectural character and interior style. This careful balance of contradiction and pattern is something we bring to the studio too, embracing our contrasting skill sets to yield fresh interpretations in our work.

DESIGNING FOR POSTERITY

Design should be able to sustain itself for many decades with minimal intervention, and great architecture should live long enough to tell a story. We set out to create buildings that will remain relevant amid ever-changing trends, that are both stylistically and environmentally sensitive, and that aren’t afraid to say something new.

RESPECTING THE ELEMENTS

We’re strong advocates for the principles of passive design, an approach that relies on a commitment to truly working with the elements. We aim to design buildings for optimal thermal performance and that excel in their unique climate and environment – regardless of whether they’re in a dense urban site, remote bushland, tropical rainforest or beachfront location. We subscribe to the biophilia hypothesis, and work to create harmony though the integration of architecture, landscape and vegetation.

A DIMENSIONAL, SHARED PERSPECTIVE

We’re proud to be a small studio that enables an individualised process and true exchange of ideas between us, our clients and our collaborators. We embrace the full tapestry of beliefs, interests and life experience brought to each commission – it’s at these junctures where we repeatedly find inspiration and spirit.

SPIRIT OF PLACE

Emotion imbued between walls; a sensation that reminds us of our awakeness in a moment; an unexpected mnemonic trigger. When a building brings a unique sense of spirit to those who interact with it, it becomes more than a building: it becomes an inhabitable story. This quality is at the heart of our philosophy of architecture and interior design.
