Located on the precipice of Toowoomba’s Great Dividing Range escarpment, the Redwood House is a sweeping family home with a sculptural quality befitting of its majestic surroundings.
The brief was to re-imagine a 1950s home on this sprawling, scenic property – refreshing the site while remaining attentive to the original dwelling’s story and character. The original concept was to retain the existing brick perimeter walls, redesign the internal layout and float a concrete sail overhead, allowing for maximum permeation of natural light. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be: with the original walls deemed not structurally sound enough for the job, the decision was made to build the home entirely anew. With their signature resourcefulness and ability to intuitively shift gears, Jesse Bennett Studio went on to convert what was initially a major setback into a unique opportunity, recycling as many original materials as possible and retaining the two-storey brick wall perimeter plan.
